The Vatican Museums and St Peter's in One Day
From the Vatican Museums to St Peter's Basilica: straight from the Sistine Chapel on a tour with the Basilica option, or 915 m on foot round to the Square. Order and days.
There are two ways from the Vatican Museums to St Peter’s Basilica. A guided tour whose option includes the Basilica takes its group from the Sistine Chapel straight into the Basilica. On your own, you leave the Museums by their entrance on Viale Vaticano and walk round the Vatican walls to St Peter’s Square, 915 m on foot, about 12 minutes, then pass the security check under the Colonnade. For a first visit, the guided way is simpler: Crown Tours’ 3-site option was US$105 on 12 November (checked November 2026); its lowest price, from $60 on promotion, usually $101 (checked November 2026), is the 2-site option without the Basilica.
The calendar above is Crown Tours’ Rome: Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & Basilica Tour, with 19,433 reviews (checked November 2026). Choose “Guided Tour of All 3 Sites”: 3 hours, the Museums and the Sistine Chapel with a guide, then the Basilica. Tours that start at 3 pm or later see the Basilica without the guide inside.
The walk between them

The Museums and the Basilica are side by side inside the Vatican, but their public doors are not: the Museums are entered from Viale Vaticano, on the north side of the walls, and the Basilica from St Peter’s Square, on the east. From the Museums entrance to the middle of the Square is 915 m on foot by the streets outside the walls, about 12 minutes at an even pace. Add the security check at the Colonnade on top of that, since everyone coming from the Square passes it.
Metro line A serves both. Ottaviano is 576 m on foot from the Museums entrance and 911 m from the middle of the Square; Cipro is 643 m from the Museums entrance and further from the Square. Bus 49 stops in front of the Museums.
Which first?
The Basilica opens at 7:00 every day, the Museums at 8:00, Monday to Saturday, with final entry at 18:00. That gives a do-it-yourself order: the Basilica at opening, then the walk round to the Museums for a timed entry. The Museums sell their own tickets online at tickets.museivaticani.va, and vaticanskiptheline.com covers the Museums’ ticket and the times to go.
A guided tour runs the other way round: the Museums first, then the Sistine Chapel, and the Basilica at the end. Allow about 3 hours for the 3-site tour and about 4 with the Dome. On your own, a morning in the Museums, the walk and an hour in the Basilica make most of a day.
Days that do not work

Sunday is the hard day. The Museums are closed on Sundays except the last Sunday of the month, when they open free from 9:00 to 14:00 with final entry at 12:30. The Basilica is open, but the Fabbrica names Sunday, with the Angelus at noon, among its busiest days.
Wednesday mornings are the other trap. The Fabbrica warns that Basilica access may be cancelled when the Wednesday general audience runs over, and Crown Tours moves its Basilica visit to 3 pm or later, self-guided, on ceremony days, Wednesday mornings among them. Pick a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday, and check the Museums’ closed days around feasts. If you are choosing between combined tours, which Vatican tour includes St Peter’s Basilica shows which carry the Basilica in every option.
