St Peter's Basilica Tour
Entry to the Basilica is free. This tour adds a guide, skip-the-ticket-line entry to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, and, in its 3-site option, the Basilica itself, entered straight from the Sistine Chapel.
The first choice
A Tour, or Just Walk In?
Entry to St Peter’s Basilica is free, every day from 7:00 to 19:00 from 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027 (Fabbrica di San Pietro, checked November 2026), so a tour sells everything around it: a guide, the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the way in, the Dome above. The tour in the calendar below, Crown Tours’ Rome: Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & Basilica Tour, shows from $60 on promotion, usually $101 (checked November 2026). That price is its 2-site option: the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, without the Basilica. The Basilica is in the 3-site option, from US$105 on 12 November (checked November 2026), entered straight from the Sistine Chapel.
Rome: Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & Basilica Tour
Pick the 3-site option: the Museums, the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica in about 3 hours from Via Mocenigo 15, US$105 on 12 November (checked November 2026). The from-price above is the 2-site option, without the Basilica.
Check dates →Rome: St. Peter's Basilica, Dome Climb, and Underground Tour
KK TOUR SRLS guides you round the Basilica and down to the papal tombs in 1.5 hours, US$37 on 12 November, or US$48 with the Dome climb (checked November 2026). Meets at Piazza della Città Leonina 2. No Museums.
See the tour →Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's Basilica Tour
Enjoy Rome, rated 4.27 out of 5. Its from-price has no Basilica: the 3-hour group option with it was US$77 on 12 November, against US$68 and US$73 for the options without it (checked November 2026). Meets at Via Germanico 8.
See the tour →Prices, ratings and review counts from the listings (GetYourGuide checked November 2026). Operators price by date and season, so treat the figures as the shape of the market, not a quote. On both combined tours the Basilica is an option: read its name before you pick a date.
Or no tour at all. The Basilica is open to anyone dressed for a church, shoulders and knees covered, who passes the security check under the right-hand Colonnade, and the Fabbrica sells its own digital audio guide with a time slot for 7 EUR. Is a St Peter’s Basilica tour worth it? weighs the two.

What free entry gives you, what each tour option adds, the ceremony days, the security check, and where everything starts.
What each Crown Tours option buys
| Option | What you see | Length | Thursday 12 November 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 sites, no Basilica | The Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel | 2 hours (a 2.5-hour version too) | US$77 |
| All 3 sites | The Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica | 3 hours | US$105 |
| All 3 sites and the Dome | The same, then the Dome by lift and stairs, on your own | About 4 hours | US$156 |
Prices are for one adult on an English-language tour, read in November 2026. Each figure is the lowest start time that day, and prices move by start time as well as by date (on 12 November the 3-site option ran from US$105 for a 2:30 pm start up to US$178 for 10:00). For Tuesday 24 November the same three were US$72, US$105 and US$156. The from-price on the card is the lowest across all dates and options, and it always belongs to an option without the Basilica.
Every option meets at Via Mocenigo 15, gives you a licensed guide and a headset, and skips the ticket line at the Museums; every visitor still passes the security check. The 3-site options then go from the Sistine Chapel straight into the Basilica, which spares you the walk round to St Peter’s Square and its security line. Tours that start at 3 pm or later see the Basilica without the guide inside. For a first visit to all three, the 3-site option is the one to pick.
Check dates for the 3-site option
Which Vatican tour includes St Peter’s Basilica? sets the same question against the other combined tours, one of which carries the Basilica in every option.
Free entry, the dress code and the hours
You do not need a ticket or a tour to go in. The Basilica opens daily from 7:00 to 19:00 from 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027 (Fabbrica di San Pietro, checked November 2026). The dress code is a church’s: shoulders covered, trousers or skirts below the knee, no shorts, miniskirts or sleeveless tops, and no hats inside. There is no cloakroom, so leave large bags at your hotel.
The security checkpoints, run by the Italian State Police, stand in the right-hand curve of the Colonnade as you face the Basilica, and every visitor coming in from the Square passes through them, tour or not. The Fabbrica runs its own guided visits from Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 17:30, and a group with its own guide of more than four people registers for 1.50 EUR a head. Sunday visiting times differ between the Basilica’s own pages, so check them before you go on a Sunday. Dress code and hours has the full rules.
Ceremony days and Wednesday mornings
St Peter’s is a working church first. The Fabbrica says visitor access may be cancelled for Holy See celebrations, or when a Wednesday general audience runs over, and it names Wednesday and Sunday, with the Angelus at noon, as its busiest days. It prints no weekly closure. The Holy See’s calendar for November 2026 lists papal Masses in the Basilica on Thursday 5 November at 9:00 and on Wednesday 18 November at 17:00, the 400th anniversary of its dedication; neither notice says what happens to visitor access.
Tours set their own terms for this. On ceremony days, Wednesday mornings among them, Crown Tours moves its Basilica visit to 3 pm or later, self-guided, and any part of the route, the Sistine Chapel included, may close without notice, with the itinerary adjusted and no refund. If the Basilica is the point of your day, avoid a Wednesday morning start and book an earlier slot on another day.
Where it is, and where the tours start

The Basilica closes the west end of St Peter’s Square. The Vatican Museums, where every combined tour begins, are entered on the far side of the Vatican walls, on Viale Vaticano: from that entrance to the middle of the Square is 915 m on foot, about 12 minutes. The Museums name Ottaviano and Cipro on metro line A as their stations; Ottaviano is 576 m on foot from the Museums entrance and 911 m from the middle of the Square, and bus 49 stops in front of the Museums.
The tours meet close by. Crown Tours is at Via Mocenigo 15, 423 m on foot from the Museums entrance. KK TOUR SRLS starts at Piazza della Città Leonina 2, 247 m from the middle of the Square, and Enjoy Rome at Via Germanico 8, 708 m from the Museums entrance. The Vatican Museums and St Peter’s in one day has the walk between the two.
Under the floor, and above the roof
Two parts of St Peter’s are not free. The Dome is a ticket of its own from the Fabbrica, 17 EUR by the stairs or 22 EUR with the lift, and either way the last 320 steps are on foot (the Dome climb). Under the Basilica, the Scavi, the excavated Roman necropolis with the tomb of St Peter, are seen only on the Excavations Office’s own visits, 20 EUR from age 10, booked by request (the Scavi and the papal tombs). The papal tombs in the grottoes above the necropolis are a separate visit, and the Rome: St. Peter's Basilica, Dome Climb, and Underground Tour (KK TOUR SRLS) includes them.
The Museums, the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica
Crown Tours from Via Mocenigo 15, with a guide and headsets. Pick the 3-site option for the Basilica. Starting from $60 per person (2 sites, no Basilica; the 3-site option with the Basilica from US$105 on 12 November, checked November 2026) on promotion, usually $101, checked November 2026.

St Peter's Basilica: Questions
Whether it is free, which tours include it, the hours and the dress code, the Dome, the Scavi, and the walk from the Sistine Chapel.
Yes. Entry to the Basilica is free, every day from 7:00 to 19:00 from 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027 (Fabbrica di San Pietro, checked November 2026). Everyone passes a security check first. The Basilica also sells an optional online time slot with its digital audio guide for 7 EUR. What costs money is the Dome, the Scavi under the Basilica, the Vatican Museums and any guide. See is a St Peter's Basilica tour worth it.
Only if the option you book says so. The big combined tours sell the Basilica as a dearer option: Crown Tours' Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & Basilica Tour shows a low price for its 2-site option without the Basilica, and has the Basilica in its 3-site option, from US$105 on 12 November (checked November 2026). Read the option name before you pick a date. See which Vatican tour includes St Peter's Basilica.
Daily 7:00 to 19:00 from 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027 (Fabbrica di San Pietro). The Dome keeps shorter hours: 7:30 to 17:00 from 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027, and 7:00 to 18:00 in summer. Access can be cancelled for Holy See celebrations, or when a Wednesday general audience runs over. Sunday visiting times differ between the Basilica's own pages, so check before going on a Sunday. See dress code and hours.
Shoulders covered, and trousers or skirts below the knee. The Basilica's rules exclude shorts, miniskirts and sleeveless tops, and ask visitors not to wear hats inside. There is no cloakroom, so leave bulky bags behind. It is a working church: people come to pray and to hear Mass.
17 EUR by the stairs, 22 EUR with the lift, booked online with the Fabbrica di San Pietro (checked November 2026). The climb is 551 steps from the bottom, or 320 after the lift, which goes up to the terrace. Both tickets include the Basilica and an audio guide; the Dome is not wheelchair accessible. See the Dome climb.
On a tour whose option includes the Basilica, the group goes from the Sistine Chapel straight into it. On your own, the walk from the Vatican Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano to the middle of St Peter's Square is 915 m on foot, about 12 minutes, then the security check under the Colonnade. See the Vatican Museums and St Peter's in one day.
The Basilica's own pages print no weekly closure. They say access may be cancelled for Holy See celebrations or if a Wednesday general audience overruns, and they name Wednesday and Sunday as the busiest days. Tours set their own terms: on ceremony days, Wednesday mornings among them, Crown Tours moves its Basilica visit to 3 pm or later, self-guided.
Not on the tours carded here: the Scavi, the excavations under the Basilica with the tomb of St Peter, are booked only with the Excavations Office (Ufficio Scavi). It charges 20 EUR, or 14 EUR for ages 10 to 17, admits no one under 10, and treats every booking as a request. The papal tombs in the grottoes are a different visit, included in some Basilica tours. See the Scavi and the papal tombs.
At Via Mocenigo 15, 00192 Rome, 423 m on foot from the Vatican Museums entrance. The Vatican Museums name Ottaviano and Cipro on metro line A as their stations: 576 m and 643 m on foot from the Museums entrance.
